Day 1: Melbourne City

"Good eats, crazy parties, amazing shopping, oh and don't forget to stock up on those surf wear," were some of what my friends told us to look out for in Melbourne.

Having spent a day in the city with my sister Jessica, we found something else that exceeded our expectations of an amazing city - a city with character.

As much as we love eating (and shopping in the case of my sis), it was Melbourne's laneways that really impressed us. The narrow enclaves contained one-off boutiques, great cafes and hidden stores selling the best accessories (alright, that's still shopping...), and providing a great ambience for drafternoons or just a chill nightout with mates.

Compared to what I've heard about Melbourne (pretty fast moving, but chill compared to Singapore), these laneways are where mainstream culture takes a backseat, allowing for a greater access to Melbourne's other unexplored side.

We managed to take at least a dozen detours from the main city trails to discover a wide range of lanes containing the best mini eats (though we only had a day there, we are assuming they are the best.. because really, they were). You should defo look out for these lanes as they make exploring the city interesting..

The best part was that the walls were donned with graffiti art, and the best we've ever seen as well. A famous spot is located in the southern edge of Melbourne on Hosier Lane. It's apparently legal for spray painting in this lane, so you would defo want to check out this lane to see the greatest graffiti pieces done by possibly the greatest artists!

Melbourne Digest
1. Food is pricey: AUD$15-$25 for a decent meal (excluding a drink)
2. Beer is alright: AUD$4-$15
3. Shopping is pretty good, especially in surf shops (wait for their summer sale!)
4. Visit Queen Victoria Market for a an awesome wet market experience, and antiques shopping!
5. Melbourne Park is the place to go for the Tennis Grand Slam Melbourne Park, though we just missed it by a week :(
6. Tons of Asian food that tastes decent around the city, especially in China Town.
